The Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs, 8-7, in 10 innings Thursday afternoon to take three out of four games from the visiting Cubs.
After the Cubs took a 7-6 lead with a five-run eighth inning, Michael Chavis tied the game with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning, then knocked in Ke’Bryan Hayes with a single in the bottom of the 10th to win it.
Hayes scored three times to lead the Bucs and also drove in two runs.
Chris Stratton picked up the win as the fifth Pirates pitcher of the day by pitching a spotless 10th inning. Jose Quintana started for the Bucs and pitched six innings, striking out six and giving up two earned runs.
The Pirates improved to 29-40 on the season and have won four of their last five games. They start a three-game weekend series with the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday.
