Today is the federal observance of Juneteenth. On June 19th, 1865, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas with the news that enslaved African-Americans were free. This came over two years after president Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
This year marks the second year that Juneteenth is a federal holiday. Many non-essential government offices are closed for the day, as are many state government offices. While that includes PennDOT Driver’s License Centers, it will not include PA Liquor Stores, as they are open as normal for today. There will be no mail service today, and post offices are closed. Many banks are closed for the day, and the US Stock Market will be closed today. County government offices and courts are open for today.
