Pirates pitchers and catchers are expected to report to camp today in Bradenton. The first workouts will be held Wednesday.
Position players report on Sunday, with newly-signed outfielder Melky Cabrera expected to be among them. The Bucs signed Cabrera to a minor-league contract over the weekend which included an invitation to Spring Training. If he makes the big league club, Cabrera will earn $1.15 million, and he could earn another $850,000 in incentives through the season. If he does not make the team, he can accept the minor league assignment or become a free agent.
Cabrera will compete to be outfield depth with off-season signees Lonnie Chisenhall and JB Shuck. One of them will get a lot of playing time early in the season, with right fielder Gregory Polanco not expected back from his shoulder surgery until June.
The first Spring Training game is scheduled for February 23rd against the Phillies. Opening Day is March 28th at Cincinnati.
