On Tuesday night, the United School Board approved a budget that contains a deficit and no tax increase.
The budget came to $23,359,321 in expenses and $22,931,390 in revenues. To cover the deficit of $427,931, money will be transferred from the General Fund balance. The vote went 7-1. Hunter Overdorff, the only vote against the budget, said he voted against it because of some rolling budget options that are going to continue into the near future.
Board president Eric Matava said that through the work of the district’s administration, they were able to reduce the deficit from $750,000 to just under a half-million dollars, and that the deficit is a conservative estimate.
In other business, the board accepted with regret the resignation of Junior/Senior High Principal Edward Alexander, effective July 24th. The board also celebrated the last meeting for departing superintendent Barbara Parkins. Parkins talked about what she is most proud of during her time with the district.
Next month, Theresa Young will take over as the district superintendent. She comes to United from the Keystone School District where she also served as superintendent. She was also superintendent in the Weatherly Area School District in Carbon County.
