IUP’s annual Take Back the Night event is tonight, calling attention to the problem of sexual assault.
Take Back the Night addresses sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and all other forms of sexual violence. Organizers say it reinforces the truth that victims and survivors should not live in fear and silence.
Jessica Miller is the director of IUP’s Haven Project. She says the event tonight is empowering for the victims of sexual violence, and the highly emotional Speak Out event after the march is valuable for the speakers and the audience members. “It puts a face to the problem of sexual violence. I think we talk about it a lot and we have the march which is very energetic and empowering, but then to actually have a face and a story to go with those experiences, it can be a very powerful experience.”
The Take Back the Night march begins at 8 PM in the Putt-Delaney Courtyard. T-shirts will be distributed starting at 7:15. The Speak Out afterwards is in the HUB’s Ohio Room.
