With the potential for the coldest temperatures in decades coming to the area in the next several days, the office of State Representative Jim Struzzi says that the Homer City Volunteer Fire Department has announced that it will serve as the only confirmed, round-the-clock location for a warming center for area residents starting at 8 AM Wednesday, through 8 AM Friday.
The fire hall is located at 25 Church Street in Homer City and will be open for anyone who lacks adequate heat or shelter.
The Coral-Graceton VFD is also staging a warming center at the firehall at 167 First Street in Coral starting at 8 AM Wednesday, through 8 AM Friday.
Chevy Chase Community Action Council Inc. (Chevy Chase Community Center) will be open as a Warming location Wednesday, January 30th and Thursday, January 31st from 9am -2pm with a hot lunch being served from 11:30 am – 12:30 pm for anyone (pets welcome) needing this service. After business hours may be available with prior notice.
Indiana County Aging Services says all of its centers will function as warming center during daylight hours. Anyone with questions about the senior centers’ availability may call 724-349-4500.
In addition, individuals with more long-term heating or shelter needs can dial 211 for information on available programs that may help them.
The latest information from the National Weather Service indicates air temperatures as low as -8 Wednesday night and wind chill factors as low as -30. The frigid weather will continue into Friday, when it will finally abate, with weekend temperatures reaching the mid-forties on Sunday.
