The Blairsville Bobcats girls’ basketball team clinched the top seed in the Heritage Conference South Division by defeating the second-place United Lions, 47-42, Friday night at United High School.
Blairsville was led by Sidney McCully with 22 points and junior guard Payton Potter scored 11. Two Lions recorded double-doubles, as sophomore center Maizee Fry paced United with 17 points. and 13 rebounds and senior forward Ashley Morgan scored 10 points and contributed 12 rebounds.
According to standings released by the conference after the game, Blairsville (14-3) improved to 10-1 in the conference and 6-0 in the division, while United (12-7) fell to 9-3 in the conference and 5-2 in the division and already had clinched a semi-final berth in the Heritage Conference final four. This means that United will travel to Penns Manor for a conference semifinal on Feb. 4 while Marion Center will visit Blairsville.
Twenty four hours after pulling the biggest upset of the basketball season by handing Ligonier Valley their first loss Thursdayl night, and controlling their own fate for a berth in the Heritage Conference playoffs, the Homer-Center Wildcats boys’ basketball team turned in arguably their worst performance of the year losing, 41-34, Friday night at Northern Cambria.
The Wildcats led 16-10 at the half. The game was tied at 34 apiece with 1:24 remaining. but the Colts scored the final seven points if the game.
With Homer-Center’s loss, United clinched the second playoff spot in the South Division, and Homer-Center was eliminated.
On U92.5 FM last night, the Penns Manor girls defeated West Shamokin, 70-36. Here’s a recap by Todd Marino.
The Homer-Center girls lost to Saltsburg by the score of 54-38. Homer-Center trailed at halftime, 25-20. Marlee Kochman had 16 points and Faith Buggey pulled down 12 rebounds.
