In his remarks to the State System Board of Governors last week, the president of the faculty union at the state-owned universities sounded a hopeful note, with just a couple of concerns.
APSCUF President Kenneth Mash said the State System Redesign, as a conceptual document, offers “a lot to be excited about.” Concerns include the implementation of the redesign, but there are also some policy issues Mash said “will require greater discussion.” He applauded the tone that Chancellor Dan Greenstein has set for the “conversations”.
Mash also expressed concern about the new policy for selecting university presidents, saying alternates on search committees need to be in on the process from the beginning, and also questioning whether the use of consulting firms for presidential searches are necessary. He said given the cost of search firms, the System might want to assess their value.
APSCUF and the State System are currently negotiating a new contract for faculty and coaches. The one-year deal in place now expires June 30th.
