As the weekend approaches, gas prices continue to climb at the federal, state and local level.
According to Triple-A, the national average is once again at record highs at $4.71 a gallon. In the last 24 hours, the average jumped by five cents. It also represents a 17-cent jump over last week and a 56-cent jump from last month. Last year at this time, the national average was $3.04 a gallon.
Pennsylvania’s average this morning is also at a high level this morning at $4.85 a gallon. That’s also a five-cent jump over the last 24 hours, a nine-cent jump from last week and a 48-cent jump from last month. Last year, Pennsylvania’s average was $3.16 a gallon.
The averages are going up due to increased demand. Triple-A reports that gasoline demand grew from 8.8 million barrels a day to nearly 9 million barrels a day as drivers hit the roads for Memorial Day weekend. Also, the cost of crude oil remains at $115 a barrel. The price of crude oil continues to increase amid supply concerns from the market as the European Union works to implement a 90 percent ban on Russian oil imports by the end of the year. Crude prices are also going up by increased demand expectations from the market after China lifted Covid-19 restrictions.
Indiana County’s average this morning is $4.79 a gallon, tying it with Westmoreland County. The lowest average in the region is $4.77 a gallon in Cambria County. Jefferson County is next highest at $4.78. Clearfield’s average is $4.82 a gallon and Armstrong County has the highest average in the region at $4.83 a gallon.
Gas prices in Indiana, Homer City, Blairsville and Clymer are all coming in at $4.79 a gallon this morning.
