New State System of Higher Education Chancellor Dan Greenstein said in his first “State of the System” address yesterday that the fourteen state-owned schools will “transform” themselves with its ongoing redesign of its operations, opening up every academic program at every campus to every student.
After his formal inauguration ceremony, Greenstein detailed his vision for the State System to the Board of Governors. He said the System simply cannot survive without changing, and the change must be transformative. The new chancellor said the System cannot “tweak” itself out of its problems.
Some of the changes coming to the State System will include the universities combining more of their business and administrative functions; partnering with K-12 schools and two-year colleges to develop new “credentialing pathways” to meet high-demand workforce needs; “doubling down” on student retention; and working with students who have left school and with adult learners who want to return to college to complete their degrees.
