As summer approaches and temperatures increase, the cost of cooling off is going up.
Starting on Wednesday, electricity rates will increase for about 75 percent of Pennsylvania’s households. That includes Penelec customers, whose rates are going up 35.5 percent, from 6.232 cents to 8.443 cents per kilowatt hour.
The quarterly rate hikes are in response to higher costs for the generation of energy. The charges make up about half of a customer’s electric bill.
