The Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence has issued a report that says 102 people were killed last year in domestic violence incidents in the commonwealth.
None of the deaths were reported in Indiana County, but our neighboring counties were not as fortunate. Westmoreland County reported nine, Cambria County had three, and Armstrong and Clearfield counties each had two. Like Indiana County, Jefferson County had none.
The data was compiled using media reports and includes victims, perpetrators, and two police officers who were responding to the scene. The youngest victim was just a year old, the oldest was 86, and 56 of the 102 were female. The leading cause of death was gunshot. Fifty-seven of the victims were shot, 25 were stabbed, and eleven were beaten.
The report notes that more than 1,600 have been killed by domestic violence in the last decade, and that the numbers will change as the coalition continues to study the data.
