The acting Pennsylvania Secretary of State confirmed that there will be a recount in the state-wide primary election for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate.
At a news conference yesterday, Leigh Chapman said that the difference in the top two candidates in the race, former TV Personality Dr. Mehmet Oz and former Hedge Fund CEO David McCormick, is 902 votes in favor of Oz. That represents a 0.07 percent difference between the two, which is significantly less than the one-half percent threshold that will trigger a statewide recount.
One concern is if there are enough outstanding ballots for him to make up the difference. The Department of State said that there were about 10,000 provisional ballots that need to be counted, but it’s not known how many of those ballots were Republican. There are also 860 Republican mail-in ballots that did not have the handwritten date on the envelopes that are the subject of court cases. Chapman talked about the instructions given to counties that have mail-in ballots that lack a handwritten date.
Recounts can start tomorrow and start no later than June 1st, and the recount must be finished by June 7th, with the final results submitted to the Department of State the next day.
