Last night the Indiana School Board got a look at the proposed 2017-2018 budget.
Two budget situations were presented last night: one with a .15 mil increase, which would raise taxes by $26.18 for district residents, and one with a .45 mil increase, which would mean a $78.63 increase for district residents. Superintendent Dale Kirsch said that the district this year is in sound fiscal shape, despite a $1 million shortfall.
The board is scheduled to approve a preliminary budget at their May 8th meeting, with the final budget adoption set for June 26th.
In other business, the board approved the recommended changes to the Ben Franklin School Project that would widen a fire vehicle access road to 16 feet and add a pad that would allow a ladder truck to pull past the building to enable aerial operations. The area in question was to be a garden space used for educational purposes, but Superintendent Dale Kirsch said that getting the approval on this safety issue was important. The changes were based on recommendations from the Indiana Fire Association.
Finally, the board accepted the resignation of board member Robert Edwards, who has been absent from several board meetings due to his current employment. The board has 30 days to fill the position. Anyone who is interested may contact Anise Markle at the district offices to apply.
