More details were released regarding the unexpected death of Steelers QB Dwayne Haskins yesterday.
Toxicology reports from the Broward County Medical Examiner’s office show that Haskins’ blood alcohol level was .24 — more than three times the legal limit — at the time he was struck by a dump truck along a south Florida freeway last month. In addition, reports show that Haskins also tested positive for ketamine and norktamine, also known as anesthetics.
His cause of death was revealed as blunt force trauma and it is still ruled an accidental death. There’s still no word on what Haskins was doing walking along the highway, but 9-1-1 calls made by his wife indicate that he had run out of fuel.
The Steelers, along with other NFL teams, are set to begin offseason training programs, or OTAs, today, with plenty of gaps to fill.
The first of six non-contact conditioning workouts see 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 workouts, but many players see this as an opportunity to make a statement and prove why they should be considered for the 53-man roster.
Some things to keep an eye on for during OTAs are if DE Stephon Tuitt will attend after he missed last season with injury and after he dealt with the grief of losing his brother. The team has indicated that he wants to return and he’s owed $9.05 million in base salary, but reports suggest he could retire early after he accumulated nearly $56 million over his career.
Tuitt could also wait to show up until mandatory mini-camp in June.
Other things to watch out for are who the Steelers roll out as QB1, if stars Diontae Johnson and Minkah Fitzpatrick sit out until new contracts are reached and who will hold down the fort on the offensive line.
