For the sixth time in MLB history, and first time since 2008, a Major League Baseball team won a game without collecting a hit. That team was the Pirates, who failed to collect a hit against Cincinnati Reds starter Hunter Greene yesterday but still came out on top, 1-0.
Joe Block has the recap on this unusual win.
The Pirates head to the “friendly confines” of Wrigley Field tonight to open a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs. Dillon Peters (3-1, 1.83 ERA) will oppose Wade Miley (0-0, 9.00 ERA). Airtime 7:10 on WCCS.
Starter Jose Quintana continued to shine for the Pirates after throwing seven shut-out innings yesterday. He allowed just three hits while collecting five strikeouts. The veteran southpaw is generating conversation about a possible All-Star bid after not allowing a run in his last 13 innings while collecting 10 strikeouts.
Over the weekend, the Pirates announced that RHP Beau Sulser and LHP Sam Howard were claimed off waivers after being designated for assignments last week.
Sulser, who was claimed by the Baltimore Orioles, pitched in four games with the Pirates this season and collected 10 strikeouts over 9.2 innings. Howard was claimed by the Detroit Tigers and posted a 9.00 ERA in just two innings of work.
Additionally, RHP Tyler Beede, who the Pirates claimed from the San Francisco Giants, was activated to the active roster. He did not pitch this weekend.
ALTOONA CURVE
The Somerset Patriots scored nine runs in two innings to beat the Altoona Curve, 12-8, in the series finale on Sunday.
Luis Ortiz allowed just one run and one hit over three innings on the mound, while relievers Austin Roberts and Brad Case coughed up four runs each.
Third baseman Andres Alvarez went 3-for-5 with a home run and a double, while Brendt Citta went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run.
The Curve are off today and return to PNG Field tomorrow as they welcome the Richmond Flying Squirrels for a six-game series.
