The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture recently announced that funds will be allocated across the state to grow markets and increase the quality and sustainability of specialty crops, and Indiana County is set to receive a portion of those funds.
According to a news release, the Indiana County Conservation District will receive approximately $100,491 through “Federal Specialty Crop Block Grants” and it will show how to grow specialty crops through the creation of demonstration test plots. These plots will be set up in three locations and they are said to expand the community knowledge of specialty crops and to “decrease food deserts.”
The aforementioned locations are not specified at this time.
The grant money is funded through the federal Farm Bill and it was awarded in a competitive process administered by the department.
