Ahead of an expected increase in the cost of electricity thanks to Governor Wolf’s actions to join Pennsylvania to RGGI, the state Public Utility Commission is offering up tips to reduce the impact of those rate increases for customers.
The price changes combined with the expected increased electricity use in the summer months could make electric bills high for many consumers. Penelec has announced that customers could see an increase to 8.443 cents per kilowatt hour, representing a 35 percent jump. PUC Spokesperson Nils Hagen-Frederiksen says one way people can lower their electricity rate is to look for an alternative energy supplier. He said that the PUC has a marketplace for that at PAPowerSwitch.com
The PUC says having energy efficient appliances and taking steps to conserve energy in the home, including making a one degree change in a thermostat, can also help to reduce electricity costs.
Electric bills are set to increase June 1st, while RGGI will go into effect July 1st barring any further legal action that would pause or stop the process.
