Along with May being National Foster Care Month, it is also Foster Parent Awareness Month and Indiana County is doing its part during this initiative.
The month, dedicated to recognizing that everyone can play a part in enhancing the lives of children in foster care, but communities, including Indiana County, need more individuals to care for foster children.
One way the county is getting involved is through the Families First Act, and County Commissioner Robin Gorman said on Indiana in the Morning that the idea is to keep children within their families while increasing the number of foster parents in the county.
Foster parenting might seem like a major undertaking for relatives of foster children, but Commissioner Mike Keith said that it helps them grow and develop more when placed with relatives.
Terri Wells of Children and Youth Services says that choosing foster parents is a process, but it ensures that children are placed with the right families.
Anyone interested in foster parenting is invited to attend an Open House this weekend at the Jimmy Stewart Airport. It will be from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. with refreshments provided by Reziki Café.
