The Pirates split a doubleheader with the Reds, losing the first game, 9-2, and winning the second game, 8-5, hitting three home runs in the first inning and another in the fourth. The Bucs also lost catcher Roberto Perez to a hamstring injury.
In the first game, the Pirates bullpen surrendered seven runs in the 8th inning, after the Bucs had loaded the bases with no outs in their half of the inning but failed to score when KeBryan Hayes, Daniel Vogelback, and Michael Chavis struck out.
In the nightcap, Bryan Reynolds homered, Hayes doubled, and Yoshi Tsutsugo and Diego Castillo homered, all in the first inning. Ben Gamel also homered, in the fourth inning, for the Pirates.
