The Pirates should have won both games of their doubleheader yesterday in Detroit, but they had to settle for a split.
Joe Block recaps the games.
The Bucs led the first game 2-0 but three late errors allowed three unearned runs to score and give Detroit the lead, which held up for the Tigers’ win.
The Pirates are off today and start a four-game, three-day series in Cincinnati tomorrow.
In injury news, shortstop Kevin Newman has resumed all baseball activities except running. He is on the injured list with a left groin strain and is not expected back until late this month, according to director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk. Reliever Duane Underwood Jr., who has been out since the season-opening series with St. Louis, threw a rehab outing in Bradenton on Tuesday and will join Indianapolis for another rehab appearance this weekend before being re-evaluated for a hamstring injury.
ALTOONA
Erie jumped on Altoona starter Luis Ortiz for four runs in the first inning and beat up Curve pitching for eight more runs on the night in a 12-4 win that evened the six-game series at a game apiece.
Right-hander Kyle Nicolas pitches for the Curve in tonight’s game.
