The anticipated pitching matchup between Mitch Keller and Brandon Woodruff didn’t materialize last night as the Pirates and Brewers slugged it out at PNC Park.
Joe Block has the story.
The Pirates scrambled to put together their roster yesterday after they put Bryan Reynolds and Cole Tucker on the covid-19 injury list and pitcher Anthony Banda on the ten-day injury list with a non-covid illness. Needing players quickly, they summoned Altoona outfielder Jack Suwinski and infielder/outfielder Tucupita Marcano and called up reliever Sam Howard from his rehab assignment in Indianapolis. Suwinski and Marcano drove from Akron, where the Curve were playing, and arrived during batting practice. Suwinski started in right field and went 1-for-4 in his Major League debut. Marcan0 hit a pinch-hit double in the 8th.
In the second game of the series tonight, second game of the series, Pirates right-hander Bryse Wilson pitches against Brewers lefty Aaron Ashby. It’s a 6:10 airtime on WCCS.
ALTOONA CURVE
The Altoona Curve opened a six-game series with Akron with a 6-4 win on the road. Liover Peguero and Nick Gonzalez both had two hits with a double and an RBI each, and Carter Bins and Lolo Sanchez also each had two hits. Designated hitter Andres Alvarez hit a home run. Starter Carmen Mlodzinski threw four innings of one-hit shutout ball.
Game two of the series is tonight, with the Curve sending right-hander Mike Burrows to the mound.
