The Penguins had the day off yesterday as they enter the final week of the regular season, just a point ahead of Washington for third place in the NHL Metro Division. The Pens need to finish third to avoid a first-round playoff series against the top team in the Atlantic Division, the Florida Panthers.
While the Penguins take on Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers tonight and follow up with the season finale Friday against Columbus, the Capitals have three games left, tonight and Thursday against the New York Islanders, and Friday against the New York Rangers.
Forward Brian Boyle was chosen yesterday by the Pittsburgh chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association as the Penguins nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. The award is conferred on the player “who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.” Boyle, a cancer survivor, was signed to a tryout contract prior to the season after sitting out last year. He has 10 goals and 9 assists in 65 games this year and is a key member of the Pens’ penalty kill unit.
Tonight’s game is on 92.5 FM U92 and the U92 Sportschannel. Faceoff is shortly after 7 o’clock with the pregame set to start at 6.
