The Steelers’ longtime coach/GM team of Mike Tomlin and Kevin Colbert held their annual – and last – pre-draft news conference yesterday, talking about free agency, the draft, and working together one last time before Colbert steps down as GM next month.
Highlights:
Colbert says the Steelers are ready for the draft.
Colbert says the team can’t make the mistake of “reaching” for a lesser player in the draft to address a perceived need.
Colbert says the Steelers are well aware that they have to get it right, especially at the top of the draft.
Mike Tomlin says the Steelers have a specific draft philosophy, which is increasingly influenced each year by the free agency signing period.
Tomlin says the pre-draft scouting period has been stimulating, especially scouting the quarterback class.
Tomlin says he has tried not to think too much about this being the final draft he will work with Colbert.
Colbert says he has too much work to do to reflect on stepping down as GM. The Steelers have been unusually active in free agency at the same time they have been preparing for the draft. They have added a starting quarterback and cornerback, two starters on the offensive line and one at inside linebacker, plus they have re-signed a starting cornerback, strong safety, and offensive tackle.
