The final spring practice for coach Paul Tortorella and his IUP Crimson Hawks will be held today. On Friday the team held its scrimmage, and Tortorella said he liked what he saw. He said the offense moved the ball well, and the defense came on toward the end. In the coach’s words, IUP “is getting there.”
The coach says his young defense is developing and the coaches are working on it.
Tortorella says IUP is open to transfers joining the team, but he is happy with the depth he already has, especially his younger players.
Tortorella says transfer quarterback Mak Sexton has been impressive, making all of the throws, displaying great accuracy, reading coverages, and throwing the lowest-trajectory deep ball he has seen. Perhaps most impressive, according to the coach, is Sexton’s command of the pocket.
Tortorella says Sexton has opened some eyes with his throwing, which is something that is not easy to evaluate on video.
IUP has been relatively healthy through the spring with one practice yet to go, with only offensive lineman John Robinson missing any time, more as a precaution.
Coach Pat Narduzzi added another receiver to his roster over the weekend, with the announcement by Louisiana Tech’s Jerrod “Bub” Means that he will transfer to Pitt. He will have three years of eligibility.
Means played a season as a defensive back at Tennessee before transferring to LA Tech, where he had 22 receptions for 430 yards and two touchdowns last year. He also returned kicks for the Bulldogs.
