While the Penguins were idle, the Washington Capitals went to Denver last night and beat the NHL’s top team, the Colorado Avalanche, 3-2. Marcus Johansson scored the game-winning goal midway through the third period to snap the Avs’ nine-game winning streak and pull the Caps to within one point of the Penguins for third place in the Metro Division, with Washington having a game in hand.
Coach Mike Sullivan gave the Pens a second straight day off yesterday, with a home game against the Bruins coming up on Thursday.
The eight playoff teams in the Eastern Conference are now set, but the order of finish is not. The Metro Division will send the Penguins, Hurricanes, Rangers, and Capitals. Out of the Atlantic Division, it will be the Panthers, Lightning, Maple Leafs, and Bruins. Of the eight playoff teams, only the Capitals have fewer points than the Penguins, and that just by one. The Bruins and the Penguins both have 97 points, but the Bruins have two games in hand.
