The Pirates are above .500 for the first time this season after yet another come-from-behind victory over the Nationals. Four of the five Bucs’ wins this season have come after they trailed.
Joe Block has the story.
It was another multi-hit game for infielder Michael Chavis, who started at third base while Ke’Bryan Hayes got a day off. Manager Derek Shelton says Chavis is a valuable tool for the Bucs.
After throwing 24 pitches Saturday night, reliever David Bednar walked into Shelton’s office before the game and said he was ready to pitch again yesterday. He has made four appearances and has yet to give up a run in 4-and-two-thirds innings. Shelton appreciates Bednar’s toughness.
Chavis was 3-for-4 Saturday night and 2-for-4 Sunday. Chavis is 8-of-16 with a home run and 6 RBIs this season. He says he’s seeing the ball well right now.
Shortstop Kevin Newman missed his third straight game yesterday with a groin injury, but General Manager Ben Cherington said on his weekly show on WCCS that Newman ran sprints and fielded yesterday and should be ready to return to the lineup tonight in Milwaukee.
The Pirates open a three-game series in Milwaukee tonight. Right-hander Zach Thompson starts for the Pirates against the Brewers’ lefty Eric Lauer. (7:15 Airtime on WCCS.)
ALTOONA CURVE
The Altoona Curve lost to Richmond, 6-2 in ten innings yesterday. Right—hander Kyle Nicolas had another impressive start, pitching four no-hit innings and striking out five for the Curve. Catcher Blake Sabol had a home run and outfielder Connor Scott drove in a run with a double.
The Curve open a six-game series with New Hampshire at PNG Field tomorrow night.
