Erik Karlsson summed up the Penguins’ loss last night perfectly when he was the Capitals “outworked” the Pens.
Brian Metzer has the recap.
Coach Dan Muse said after the game that goaltenders Arturs Silovs and Sergei Murashov are not to blame for the Pens giving up ten goals in their last two games. (Silovs stopped 22 of 27 shots on goal.)
Muse says the Penguins didn’t control the tempo of play, largely due to the number of turnovers, especially at the blue line.
In addition to Byran Rust and Nick Robertson, Tommy Novak scored for the Penguins. Sidney Crosby was held off the scoresheet and still has not scored a goal this season. He has only two assists so far through four games.
The Penguins yesterday eased their surplus of forwards by trading former second round draft choice Filip Hallander to Edmonton for defenseman Spencer Stastney. The trade cleared a roster spot for Bryan Rust to be activated. Stastney was a healthy scratch for all three of the Oilers’ games. He had two goals and eight assists last season in 66 games playing for Nashville and Edmonton.
The Pens also designated forward Andrei Kuzmenko as non-roster for conditioning purposes, with permission from the NHL. He left the team last month to return to his native Russia after the death of his father and returned last weekend. He had no points in two games and will remain with the team on its two-game road trip.
The Penguins play in Columbus tomorrow night.
