The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission’s electric reliability report says that while improvement was seen in 2025, severe weather kept utility companies on their toes.
The PUC said there were 55 reportable outages last year, down from a record 71 in 2024. The number of customers affected remained mostly unchanged in 2024 at close to 2.9 million. 52 of the 55 outages were weather-related. The report also states there were 20 “major events” with about 1.7 million customers affected by those situations.
Eight of Pennsylvania’s 11 electric distribution companies improved average restoration time for customers experiencing an outage, nine improved outage frequency, and eight improved overall outage duration compared with 2024.
The PUC says the overall report shows weather still to be the biggest factor for reliability issues. A statement from the commission said that instead of “excusing reliability problems because of severe weather, the report says those conditions reinforce the need for continued attention to system hardening, vegetation management, infrastructure improvements, and storm preparation and response.”
The Commission will continue to evaluate reliability performance in an effort to make the system stronger and safer for all.
