Pitt played a sloppy game, but Syracuse was even sloppier as the Panthers took a 17-0 halftime lead and never trailed in a 27-13 Panthers win. With quarterback Mason Heintschel ineffective through the air for a second straight game, Pitt turned to a ball-possession running game and some defensive splash plays, including forcing a Syracuse turnover on downs, two quarterback sacks, eight tackles for loss and fourth-quarter interceptions by Raion Strader and Braylan Lovelace. Freshman Damon Ferguson Jr. ran for 102 yards and he, La’Vell Wright, and Heintschel all ran for touchdowns for Pitt.
The Panthers will host Bucknell next Saturday.
14th-ranked IUP will play its third straight road game tomorrow at Shippensburg. It’s the 72nd renewal of the all-time series with the Red Raiders, with IUP holding a 47-14-4 advantage. Coach Paul Tortorella is 4-1 all-time against Ship, and last week earned his 70th career win as IUP’s head coach.
Airtime tomorrow will be 12:30 PM, with the kickoff slated for one o’clock on 92.5 FM U92.
