In his new blog at the start of the academic year, State System of Higher Education Chancellor Christopher Fiorentino issues a warning about the proliferation of online education, which he says has cost Pennsylvania universities “tens of thousands of residents who currently are enrolled in programs based in other states. Titled, “The power of ‘what if’”, the blog urges more state investment in education in state-owned schools, asking that long-held assumptions about public education be challenged.
Among a number of proposals he offers is consideration of the State System “offering a limited number of three-year bachelor’s programs,” which APSCUF President Dr. Kenneth Mash criticized in his address to the Board of Governors last spring.
The issue could become a sticking point in collective bargaining negotiations if the State System does formally propose the creation of a three-year bachelor’s program. Contract talks have just begun for APSCUF faculty.
