Pennsylvania’s attorney general has issued a statement on the guilty verdict in the retrial of Ronald Weiss.
The 78-year-old man was convicted on Thursday night by an Indiana County Court jury on Thursday night for the October 1978 killing of Barbara Bruzda after she and him played pool at the tavern her father owned in Tunnelton. Her body was found in February of 1979 buried beneath a pile of leaves, bludgeoned to death with a tire iron. The original guilty verdict from the 1997 trial was overturned in 2018 over prosecutorial misconduct.
In a statement, Attorney General Dave Sunday said that “Barbara’s family and friends have dealt with heartbreak and the anguish of not knowing if their loved one’s killer would be held responsible.” He added that he hoped the jury’s verdict would provide some relief.
A sentencing hearing is set for October 30th. Weiss faces a mandatory life sentence without parole.
