The Historical and Genealogical Society of Indiana County will honor those lost in a mining tragedy that happened 100 years ago today.
On this day in 1926, two explosions ripped through the Sample Run mine, killing 44 men. Four people were rescued and nine workers near the opening escaped without injury. In an interview on Indiana in the Morning, Herb Gleditsch with the Historical and Genealogical Society goes into the details of how the explosion happened.
The disaster is considered the largest mining disaster as far as death is concerned in Indiana County History. One of the event’s organizers, Jack Hanna, said that it’s an important event that needs to be acknowledged.
The event will be held today starting at noon at the Clymer Borough Building on South Sixth Street where a memorial marker currently stands.
