The Marion Center Area School District is defending its decision to award its student transportation contract to Woodridge Transit, following criticism from longtime provider Smith Bus Company.
Smith, whose 17-year contract ended June 30th, has raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest and says Woodridge could cost taxpayers more. In a statement, Superintendent Clint Weimer says the district’s solicitor reviewed those allegations and found no collusion involving district officials, board members or Woodridge.
The district also disputes Smith’s estimate of an $880,000 increase over five years, saying costs could range from about $233,000 in savings to $160,000 more, depending on annual increases.
Officials say there are also currently no anticipated overtime charges on Woodridge routes, and maintain the company offered the best overall value, including updated technology and equipment.
