The Steelers’ switch to “Saturday Night Lights” from the more traditional “Friday Night Lights” at Latrobe didn’t make a difference for fans. They still turned out in full force last night at Latrobe Memorial Stadium, selling out the stadium and raising an estimated total of more than $200,000 for the athletic programs at the Greater Latrobe School District and local service agencies.
On the field, coach Mike McCarthy opted to run a typical Steelers practice rather than dress it up for the fans, and the crowd still saw plenty of action in the drills, including a strong defensive stand in the “Franco moment” drill.
Among those sitting out were first-round draft choice Max Iheanachor, who suffered a “minor” head and neck injury on Thursday. McCarthy said Iheanachor is “okay.” Seventh-round draft choice Eli Heidenreich also was sidelined with a hamstring issue. Other injured Steelers missing from action with minor injuries last night were safety Jaquan Brisker, defensive linemen Sebastian Joseph-Day and Logan Lee, and offensive lineman Steven Jones. Cornerback Brandin Echols was also out and wore a protective boot on his left foot.
The Steelers’ first exhibition game is this Thursday night against Green Bay at Acrisure Stadium.
