Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday is co-leading a coalition of other Attorneys General asking the FCC to strengthen its “know your customer” obligations concerning illegal robocalls.
Under the plan, phone companies are required to know who is using their networks to make calls, and companies can choose to suspend or ban callers who are using their networks illegally. The move follows Sunday’s calls to cut robocallers’ access to legitimate phone numbers. In the past, he and a national coalition sent letters to phone companies asking them to stop allowing illegal robocalls. He said that the regulations would provide “another layer of protection for Pennsylvanians” against being scammed by a robocall.
The rules would:
- Require providers to understand their customers’ business
- Hold all originating providers to “Know Your Caller” standards
- Require originating providers to collect additional information on high-risk customers.
Last year, Sunday said that Americans received over 29 million scam robocalls and texts resulting in losses of nearly $2 billion.
