IUP has announced the new permanent director of the university’s marching band.
Dr. William Sugg has been the interim director since August of 2025 and prior to his appointment at IUP, he was an assistant director of bands with Pitt. He was also conductor of bands at Downers Grove South High School in Chicago. Along with his duties with “The Legend”, Sugg will be the associate director of bands for the university.
In a statement, Sugg said that he was honored to be named the permanent director and he was proud of how much ownership the students take in the program, saying, “program—they know who they are and what being in ‘The Legend’ means to them, and they were generous enough to share that meaning with me.”
IUP’s Dean of the college of Arts, Humanities, Media and Public Affairs Dr. Emily Rutter said that Sugg “not only brings extensive experience but also enthusiasm and a holistic approach to IUP students’ ensemble experience.”
The band’s leadership camp starts August 10th with band camp starting August 13th. The first performance of the year will be on August 17th at Kennywood’s Fall Fantasy Parade. Sugg will join Todd Marino on Thursday on Indiana in the Morning on WCCS.
