A bridge on Pittsburgh’s Parkway East is set to reopen tonight.
PennDOT says that the Parkway East Commercial Street bridge near the Squirrel Hill Tunnel is now scheduled to reopen a week ahead of schedule. Work on the bridge replacement project has been going on 24 hours a day to bring the project in ahead of the original August 3rd deadline. The closure has resulted in detours for commuters and tourists alike, adding time to the daily trips into Pittsburgh.
The bridge was demolished on the morning of July 16th and the new bridge was slid into place after debris was cleared. Contractors do have a financial incentive to finish early, with a $2 million bonus offered if the road reopens before 12:01 AM tomorrow.
