From Pennsylvania State Police
A police officer in Cambria County has been charged by the Pennsylvania State Police with misdemeanor counts of official oppression and false imprisonment and other charges related to alleged conduct while on-duty.
Walter Joseph Maul, Jr., 36, was charged today with misdemeanor counts of official oppression and false imprisonment as well as summary counts of harassment and disorderly conduct.
Charges were filed at Magisterial District Court 47-3-07.
On May 19, 2026, upon the request of the Cambria Township Police Department, a criminal investigation was initiated by the Pennsylvania State Police into alleged actions by the defendant, Maul, Jr., while he was on-duty and employed by the Cambria Township Police Department.
In the course of the investigation, it was learned that on May 16, 2026 at approximately 8:30 p.m., the defendant, while on-duty for the Cambria Township Police Department and in full uniform, visited the victim, an adult female acquaintance, at her apartment in Ebensburg Borough, Cambria County.
Investigators learned that the victim and the defendant had exchanged messages earlier on May 16 and that the defendant removed his body-worn camera and left it in his patrol vehicle when he arrived at the victim’s apartment that evening.
Upon his arrival, the defendant was permitted to enter the victim’s apartment. While inside the apartment, the defendant is alleged to have had inappropriate and unlawful contact with the victim to include having handcuffed the victim.
The defendant was later interviewed and the above charges were approved by the Cambria County District Attorney’s Office.
Inquiries regarding the defendant’s employment status with the Cambria Township Police Department should be referred to the Cambria Township Police Department.
