The Wolf administration is pushing for the state’s General Assembly to pass legislation concerning the PA Opportunity Program, which would send out $2000 checks to state residents.
The program would use $500 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds that were allocated to Pennsylvania to provide direct payments of $2000 for Pennsylvania Households with an income of $80,000 or less. The program is designed to help families still financially recovering from Pandemic-related expenses and managing the current cost of living, which is on the increase.
In a news release, Governor Tom Wolf said that the state has “the opportunity to ensure (Pennsylvanians) are not struggling, to ensure their success.”
The program is one part of Governor Wolf’s plan for $1.7 billion in American Rescue Plan Act funding, but his office says that the state is sitting on $2 billion in ARPA funds. The money needs to be spent by December 31st, 2024, or be returned to the federal government.
