Bond was denied on Tuesday for a man suspected of planting a bomb in an attempt to kill his landlord in June of 2025.
Westmoreland County Common Pleas Judge Scott Mears said that he felt 55-year-old James Sever of New Alexandria could not be released from jail as he felt he was a danger to the community. Sever faces charges in connection with an incident where he reportedly placed the bomb under the mower of his former landlord. That bomb went off as he started the mower on Route 22. The explosion scattered debris through his garage.
In a second incident, Sever allegedly planted another bomb on a rental truck parked in the driveway of a West Newton relative. The bomb fell off near the PA Turnpike’s North Huntingdon exit and did not explode. Sever was found after a two-month manhunt after an off-duty state trooper saw him riding an e-Bike along the Hoodlebug Trail in Center Township.
Charges in both cases range include attempted murder, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon of mass destruction and others. No word on when the trial will be held.
