Indiana County is now under a heat advisory until Friday night and people are being advised to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.
While the elderly, the very young and those with pre-existing medical conditions are at higher risk, these conditions can effect everyone. Dr. Sierra Lovisone from Indiana Regional Medical Center said that not only should parents look out for signs of heat stroke or heat exhaustion, they should also take care that the playground equipment won’t burn them.
As far as illnesses triggered by the warm weather go, Dr. Kyle Lovisone with IRMC said that there is a big difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
In both cases, people should try to get to a cooler environment like a shaded or air-conditioned area.
For heat exhaustion, symptoms include:
- Dizziness
- Thirst
- Heavy Sweating
- Nausea
- Weakness
Along with going to a cooler area, people should loosen clothing, take sips of cool water, and seek medical attention if symptoms do not improve.
For heat stroke, symptoms include:
- Confusion
- Dizziness
- Unconsiousness
People should call 911 if signs of heat stroke are present. A rapid cooldown using cool water or ice is recommended along with loosening any clothing.
