Indiana County Coroner Jerry Overman, Jr. has identified the suspect in a police-involved shooting in Indiana Borough Sunday night.
Overman said 35-year-old Andrew Wade Herman of Indiana was killed at 7:28 PM Sunday night. Indiana Borough police were sent to a home in the 100 block of North Cherry Avenue for a domestic incident. State police, who are handling the investigation, said that Herman had threatened one of the responding officers with a shovel. That lead to a foot pursuit involving the officer. When the officer caught up and tried to take the suspect into custody, Herman stabbed the officer multiple times about the face and head. That lead to the officer firing his gun and fatally wounding the suspect.
State police public information officer Trooper Cliff Greenfield said that a formal determination on the shooting will be made by the District Attorney’s office once the investigation is complete.
He added that the officer is recovering from his injuries at a local hospital and his injuries are not life-threatening.
Overman ruled Herman’s death as a homicide, and the investigation is continuing.
