Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh say many western Pennsylvania homeowners recognize ticks are common in their backyards but underestimate the risk of tick-borne illnesses such as Lyme disease.
According to an explorerclarion.com article, A 2024 survey of residents in Allegheny, Washington and Westmoreland counties found more than 80% had seen ticks on their property, yet only 32% viewed tick-borne diseases as a major health threat.
Researchers encourage residents to perform tick checks, use insect repellent, wear protective clothing and manage yard habitats to reduce the risk of infection.
