Earlier this week, the state house passed a bill that would allow chip technology similar to what’s on debit and credit cards to be used for EBT cards.
The bill would replace the current swipe cards with chip-enabled cards. The changes are designed to make it more difficult for card skimmers to get steal data from unsuspecting victims and make sure that those who need the SNAP benefits do not have them stolen. The cards would use technology to randomize transaction numbers as a way to protect someone’s identity.
The bill was passed unanimously in the state house and is now with the Senate Health and Human Services Committee.
