Wednesday night, the Penns Manor School Board approved the 2026-27 budget, which contains a tax increase.
The spending plan details $21,362,239 in expenditures and $20,637,750 in revenues, with a 4.8% tax increase to 17.065 mills. In addition to the tax increase, money from the district’s funds balance will be used to bring the budget into balance. It passed by a margin of 5-4.
Superintendent Darren Johnston said that the impasse was due to a disagreement in the tax increase. He said that while no one wants to increase taxes, they have to fill the deficit somehow.
The board also approved quotes for upgrades to the junior/senior high school, including the painting of some outside canopies and the replacement of flooring and wall carpeting in a classroom and the band room, respectively.
