Board members of the Westmoreland County Airport Authority this week awarded contracts for the third and final phase of the terminal expansion project at Arnold Palmer Regional Airport.
This phase will focus on the baggage claim area along with restrooms and common areas of the Unity Township terminal. Work on earlier phases relocated the passenger gate, install a second gate, and move the TSA area and the airport authority’s administrative offices. Concession areas and passenger bridges were also updated and a new baggage handling system was put in place.
Construction on Phase Two of the project is scheduled to start next month. The project is continuing despite a lack of a commercial carrier and the threat of a charter airline company pulling out due to a lack of TSA agents. Spirit Airlines shuttered on May 2nd, leaving Arnold Palmer without a commercial airline. TSA pulled their officers after Spirit shut down. Earlier this week, officials with Casino Tours, LLC said they would pull out as well if an agreement is reached for TSA agents to continue operations of security checkpoints.
