Homer City Generation, LP has announced that two parts of the project to build the new natural gas power plant and AI Data Center Campus have wrapped up ahead of schedule.
Over the last nine months, HCG along with demolition partner Independence Excavating have been behind the efforts to clear the site through large-scale demolition and site excavation. Both of those projects came to a close ahead of projected benchmarks.
During the demo and excavation work, over 112,000 tons of scrap materials were recycled, with the services provided by Kovalchick Corporation. That material will be put back into the steel supply chain. Crews moved approximately three million cubic yards of material and was able to maintain a strong safety record during the projects. About 130 union workers were on site.
The completion of both phases is a significant milestone in the construction, and also marks a scale-up in the workforce as there are now 1300 skilled workers on site.
In a statement, Homer City Generation’s CEO Corey Hessen said that the success of the project came down to “careful planning, strong execution and the strength of our partnerships.” He added that completing things ahead of schedule means more workers will be on-site soon. Independence Excavation’s project manager Leo Slansky said despite a harsh winter and a tight timeline, they were able to finish ahead of expected deadlines and had no lost-time incidents.
When complete, the 4.5 gigawatt natural gas-fired power plant is expected to double the power output of the former coal-fired facility and it is expected to provide power to 13 states and Washington D.C. The new plant is expected to be online in 2028.
