IUP BASEBALL
IUP senior right-hander Derick Shields was perfect through six-and-a-third innings and gave up just two runs on two hits in a complete-game 5-2 win for the Crimson Hawks over Shippensburg in the PSAC quarterfinals. Cayden Bender drove in two runs, on a bases-loaded walk and an RBI double, and Jonathan Simpson crushed a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh for IUP. Camden Rhude had two hits and walked three times. Shields struck out a career-high twelve and walked none.
IUP will play West Chester in the semis at 3 o’clock today. The Golden Rams are the top-ranked team in the Atlantic Region ratings this week and swept IUP in a doubleheader to open the season, 8-3 and 5-4 on February 20th.
East Stroudsburg plays Millersville in the other semifinal.
IUP SOFTBALL
IUP split two games in the PSAC Tournament yesterday, losing to Shippensburg 11-7 before eliminating Kutztown 11-1 in five innings.
Atlantic Region top seed Shippensburg scored four runs in the seventh inning to top IUP in the first game. The Crimson Hawks had twelve hits, all singles, with Maddie Griffin and Jaycee Haidze each having three and Emily Miller getting two. In the win over Kutztown, IUP scored nine runs in the third inning, with Delaney Patella driving in the first run with a double and then blasting a three-run homer to score the final three of the inning. Haidze and Patella each had three hits in the game, and Madison Pikula had two.
In the semis, IUP will play West Chester at 12:30 this afternoon.
