A federal rescue package is being put together for Spirit Airlines that could give the U.S. government the option to own up to 90% of the discount carrier.
On Tuesday, President Trump told CNBC he’d love to see someone buy Spirit and noted the airline employees 14-thousand people. He added, “Maybe the federal government should help that one out.”
The agreement has not yet been finalized, but sources say that it would offer as much as $500 million in financing. Talks are still going on and an agreement might still not be reached.
The airline, which operates one route out of Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in Latrobe, is currently trying to exit a second bankruptcy and is reportedly on the verge of liquidation.
